Da Capo

4 01 2011

After putting it off for a REALLY long time, I finally decided to try out Da Capo.  I’d heard quite mixed things about it, so I wasn’t sure if it was really “Da Crapo”, or a fairly decent, entertaining game. After playing for a while, I realized the downfall of Da Capo: it’s just really, really boring. None of the characters are particularly memorable, although several are slightly more interesting than others. The common route is pretty much non-existent, since Da Capo relies on a map movement system which allows you to witness events with the characters you would like to see. I’ve never been much of a fan of this system, since I think it requires too much random guessing in order to get to the route that you want. Some people might like it, but it was a definite downside for me. The lack of a common route is ultimately a good thing though, since the quality of the routes really varies.

I started off with Kotori’s route. It was a pretty nice route, and I’d say it was the second best of the game. Although Kotori isn’t all that interesting, she’s a likeable character, and her route implemented the magical elements of Da Capo well, unlike some of the others. Kotori’s route was a fun route that didn’t drag, and I found myself satisfied with the ending.

When I first saw Mako, I instantly liked her. Although I liked Mako the most initially, her route was absolutely terrible. It just felt like her route was a rush job with very little effort put into it (I wouldn’t be surprised). Not only was the route the shortest, but it was the only route that didn’t explain anything about the magic of the island or of Juni’chi himself. Don’t you hate it when interesting characters get such horrible routes?

I didn’t expect much going into Moe’s route. She’s a cute character, but I didn’t feel like there was a lot of depth to her. Luckily, I was wrong! Moe’s route is by far the most interesting in Da Capo. There is more to her than it seems, and the drama in her route was handled well. I think her route was the longest, but the length was put to good use.

I’m not sure if Sakura’s route was bad, or if I just really didn’t like Sakura as a character. I suppose you could like this route, if you’re a fan of hyperactive lolis that also happen to be geniuses. It really seemed to drag though! The drama in this route felt really forced and everything seemed to tie together a bit too neatly.

I decided to leave the main heroine’s route for last, excluding the two secret routes. I wasn’t looking forward to playing Nemu’s route, since I really don’t like her. Since the moment I saw her, she made me think of Miyako from ef, another character I disliked (Yes, I know Da Capo was made before ef, but I played it first, so it still reminds me of her!) Speaking of ef, that is a visual novel I recommend. It starts out a little slow, but the last few chapters are amazing. Yuuko is lovely! Anyway, back to Nemu’s route! Well, Nemu’s a clingy annoyance with no personality, in my opinion. Like Sakura’s route, I couldn’t really get into it. It had a good ending though; they managed to make it quite unexpected.

On to the secret routes! (Spoilers ahead)

Well, there are two secret routes in Da Capo, but I’ll group them together since they worked in a pretty similar way. Basically, both of these routes take place with characters that have a human counterpart, but are not human themselves. Miharu (top picture) is Nemu’s best friend, who unlike Nemu, is cute, lovable, and not a bitch! Sadly, Miharu gets injured in an accident, and ends up in a coma. Naturally, a robot is created to replace her. By Kotori’s sister! Anyway, cute, fluffy robot times, the robot starts to malfunction, and Miharu wakes up again. Happily ever after with the real Miharu is implied.

Finally, there is the Misaki/Yoriko route. Because humans aren’t interesting enough, Yoriko is a catgirl maid. Yes, a catgirl AND a maid. I still have no idea why she was a maid in the first place…anyway, Yoriko is the cat of a wealthy, but unhappy and secluded, girl named Misaki. Misaki has a crush on an unnamed guy (woah, it’s you!!!!!!!!!), but she doesn’t have the guts to do anything about it. Yoriko does what any good cat would do: takes the place of her owner so she can live win over the man that she loves! That is disturbing in so many ways…anyway, happy living together times, Yoriko turns back into a cat, Misaki goes to Jun’ichi’s school and they live happily ever after. Neither of these routes have much substance, but they were cute enough and entertaining.

Da Capo isn’t all that bad, but it’s not good by any means either. Conveniently, the common route is short, so if there’s a particular girl (or robot or catmaid) that you like, feel free to go on their route and ignore the rest. You won’t be missing much. Instead of playing Da Capo, play ef! Yuuko is much more worthy of your love! It’d be a lot more fitting to end on a Da Capo picture, but I like Yuuko, so whatever!

Aww, I love Yuuko! Too bad ef isn’t the cheerful happy land of Da Capo…*sniff*

Starting anew!

29 12 2010

Wow it’s been almost a year since I’ve posted anything! That’s really sad…anyway, I was inspired to start posting again. Wow, I feel like a have a LOT of stuff to catch up on. I have a huge backlog of video games, lots of current anime to catch up on, anime I’ve put on hold, anime that has been recommended to me, a huge list of visual novels to complete…I’m working on it! I’ll make some posts about what I’ve been up to in the next couple days! My current goal is to finish Da Capo…trudging through the Nemu route, I don’t really like her very much.  Considering Da Capo isn’t the most interesting anyway, it’s quite a chore to get through…on a related note, faceless protagonists look like such creepers.

Yume Miru Kusuri

28 01 2010

I finally got around to playing Yume Miru Kusuri: A Drug That Makes You Dream. I’ve heard that it’s pretty much a necessity for English visual novel fans, and that it forms a kind of “holy trinity” of translated visual novels with Kana ~Little Sister~ and Ever17: The Out of Infinity (which I also must get around to). I will admit, it is quite good so far. However, I was a little bit let down, given my incredibly high expectations for this game.

If you would like a bit of a plot summary, here you go (copied from Wikipedia):

Kouhei Kagami is a Japanese student with excellent grades and a fairly normal social life, but feels empty and transparent inside. The story revolves a pivotal moment in Kouhei’s life where three girls more depressed and lonely than himself get involved with him and make his boring life a roller coaster of emotions. Kohei must choose one of them or risk losing all of them to their own despair.

That sounds pretty crappy, but there’s your most basic summary, I guess. I’m about 2/3 of the way through the game, having completed Aeka and Mizuki’s route, but not Nekoko’s. The artwork is a hit or miss, with a unique style. I personally like it, but to each their own. The background music is very impressive, consisting of piano pieces, excluding the opening song, which is very nice by the way.

I’ll post on the individual routes later when I have the time. Anyways, off to Nekoko’s route! This should be interesting.

I’m Still Alive!

26 01 2010

Hey, I realized I haven’t posted in a really long time. That’s because I’ve been procrastinating, both with schoolwork, and other aspects of my life. I know it’s a bit late, but I’ve decided to make a New Year’s Resolution: to stop procrastinating! It really ruins lives. Almost all of the problems in my life have stemmed from my procrastination. From now on, I’m going to try and post at least every other day.

On a completely different note, I just finished the Kotomi arc of the Clannad anime. I’d completely forgotten how sad it was.

Final Fantasy VI Advance First Impressions

19 01 2010

On Friday, I started playing Final Fantasy VI Advance. I spent a couple hours deciding if I should buy this game at my local Gamestop or not, and I’m very glad I did! If you’ve played the game before, I’m about to go to the opera house. I would guess I’m about 1/3 of the way through the game, looking at several walkthroughs. I’m pretty excited for the opera scene, since I heard it’s one of the best parts of the game.

Final Fantasy VI is really interesting so far. There’s a lot of characters so far, which is a plus for me. At the point where I am at, I’m pretty sure there have been 9  nameable characters.

(very minor spoilers ahead)

Terra- Girl who was born with the ability to use magic. Everyone is amazed by it. A lot of “Who am I? What should I do? Who should I trust?” due to her amnesia.

Locke- Thief, calls himself a treasure hunter. He really hates the empire, and is obsessed with keeping his promises. He’s really good in battles once you get the Mug ability.

Mog-Moogle. Not much has happened with him yet. He narrates some parts of the story.

Edgar- King of Figaro. He seems to flirt with any and all women, otherwise nice guy. He’s really useful, his tools can deal out a lot of damage.

Shadow- Assassin. He travels with some sort of dog thing. Nobody trusts him, and he’s very mysterious. He can use the throw ability.

Sabin-Edgar’s twin brother, he left the castle to find his own freedom. He’s also really useful, as his blitzes deal out a lot of damage.

Celes-Former general of the empire, she is infused with magic from espers. Celes has lots of MP, which comes in handy.

Cyan-Retainer to the king of Doma, uses olden day speech. He’s pretty annoying, in my opinion. He can use bushido techniques in battle.

Gau-Young boy who acts like an animal. Like Cyan, he’s pretty annoying. His rage techniques deal out a decent amount of damage, but they are really annoying to build up.

The character’s may be a little cliche, but that doesn’t make it a bad game by any means. So far, there has been a large emphasis on story, which leads me to believe that this will end up being a quite long game. It’s not easy either. Now I admit that I’m not the best gamer in the world, but I’ve died somewhere in between 5-10 times. One nice feature about this game is the fact that your experience points carry over, even when you get a game over. This is great for when you run into a difficult random encounter, and you realize that you haven’t saved in about a hour. There are usually a good number of save points, however I have run into a couple of places which are both quite difficult and lacking in save points (Zozo, I’m looking at you).

The soundtrack is very nice, and I haven’t had any complaints so far. Terra’s Theme and the Phantom Train are especially nice, in my opinion.

Although there are not any side quests which I have found thus far, I like the element of choice to the story. For example, there was a time when there were three different character scenarios, and you got to pick the order you did them in. The order did not affect the story, and it certainly wasn’t necessary, but it was still a nice feature. I also liked the group battles and party choices. In the group battles, you must divide all of your party members into three groups to fight with; however, they do not need to fight equally, one group can do all of the fighting if you wish. This allows you either balance your weaker characters with your strong characters, or make an incredibly overpowered team which does all of the fighting, it’s up to you. The party selections are also nice, at almost all times you can choose who is in your party. This is great if you have a character who deals out way more damage than anyone else (for me Sabin and Edgar are far more powerful than the rest of my characters), or if you want to keep the characters which you find utterly annoying out of your party (Gau and Cyan!).

So far, Final Fantasy VI Advance has been an incredibly entertaining game to play, and I highly recommend it if you are a fan of RPGs. Now I must continue to play, as I am very excited to see the opera scene!

Last.fm

17 01 2010

I’ve never really used Last.fm, even though I made an account last August. That i, until yesterday. I have now discovered the awesomeness of Last.fm! It’s like Pandora, only better! I love the iTunes scrobbler, and it does a very nice job of getting the correct songs I am listening to off iTunes. It’s really nice for keeping track of the songs I really like, as well as finding new music. It also seems like it would be good for making playlists, although I haven’t really done that yet. If you want to check out my account, it’s also called Bprrie.

First post!

16 01 2010

Hello! Bprrie here. Well, I decided to make a blog for my ramblings. If anyone actually reads this, I will be incredibly surprised. If you want to find out about me, check the About Me section. I’m too lazy to repost the information. Anyways, if you’ve read the About Me page, you will know that I love visual novels! Since I can’t read Japanese, I have to make due with official and fan translations. I’m looking forward to a lot of the current fan translations, however these are the ones which I am most excited about:

ef: It’s currently fully translated with the fandisc, and is in the editing and testing process. According to NNL, it should be released in January. I’m really excited! The art is rather good looking, and I hear it has a great story. I’ve got the anime downloaded on my external hard drive, so I may watch it if I get too impatient.

G-Senjou no Maou: The first three of the five chapters have been translated, however this project seems to be stalled. I am quite disappointed, since the story seems really interesting.

You play the role of Asai Kyosuke, the son of a legendary gangster infamous in the underworld. You spend your time listening to Bach, playing God at school and covertly working for your stepfather, a ruthless financial heavyweight. This idyllic existence is broken when two individuals appear in the city – a beautiful girl from your past named Usami Haru with hair you could get lost in for days, and a powerful international gangster known only as Maou. Almost without delay, the two begin a deadly cat-and-mouse game, bringing you and your friends into the crossfire. Plotting, political intrigue and layer upon layer of interlocking traps are the weapons in this epic battle of wits.

Also, it has one of the best openings I have seen!

Air: Translation is currently at 52.47%. Progress is really slow on this one, but at least it still seems to be semiactive. I’ve really wanted to read this ever since I’ve seen the anime. I mainly want to play this for the Minagi route.

Minagi Tohno~

Little Busters!: A partial patch was released for the first Rin route, and progress is currently at 52%. This may be the visual novel I would like to be translated the most. Unfortunately, it seems to have completely stalled for two months. Although I haven’t heard the best things about the character routes, Key+touching stories of friendship=win. Plus Kudryavka is adorable~

Adorable Kudryavka:

-My Girlfriend is the President-: I honestly just want to play this for the genderbent Putin route. Which is apparently fully translated. Yay! I may play the rest of the game too, if it’s entertaining enough.

Putina:

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien-I’ve been waiting for this game for the longest time. Unfortunately, I won’t be getting it anytime soon, since the translation group is stalled at 30%. Although the anime was mediocre to me, that was probably because I didn’t really like Mitsuki. I really want to play the Akane route. I liked her character the best by far.

Akane:

School Days-It’s apparently fully translated, although I have a feeling it won’t be released for a LONG time. Anyways, it’s FULLY ANIMATED. And it’s got 21 endings! I’m also looking forward to seeing a happy ending to School Days, and one where the main character is less of a jerk.

Fate/Hollow Ataraxia-I loved Fate/Stay Night, so I pretty much have to play this no matter what (more Illyasviel!) It’s apparently 25.8% translated.

Because we need an Illyasviel picture in here:

YU-NO: Although this game is really old, everyone seems to think it’s amazing, so it must at least be worth trying out. Plus, it’s really long. I like my visual novels on the long side. Currently at 29.16%.

Devils Devel Concept: This one’s 15% translated, although I hear a large update is in the works. I don’t really know much about it, but the opening convinced me to at least try it out.

Opening:

Tomoyo After: Tomoyo was my favorite heroine in Clannad, and aside from After Story, I felt that she had the best route, which is saying a lot. Too bad it’s only 9% translated with no progress since March.

Finally,

Eden*- I’m really excited for this one! The translation project just started, and it’s currently at 8.88%. It’s a short kinetic novel, but it’s sci-fi, and gorgeous, and it’s got a great opening!

Gorgeous:

Great opening:

That was a pretty long first post. Oops!
